Today we take a bit of a detour to Denver, Colorado. During my stay this week for National Association of Hispanic Journalists Convention, I headed to Mexican restaurant and bar, Zocalo in Downtown Denver to watch Mexico and Uruguay go head to head. Being in a different state definitely proves that World Cup fever exists everywhere. Jose Cuervo Tradicional and Boa Energy drink were sponsoring today's game. Jose Cuervo girls greeted fans at the door and gave out wristbands for three free drinks and a ticket for a free burrito. Things like this are what attract fans to Zocalo.
By half-time the score was 0-1 Uruguay as they scored right before in the 43rd minute.
Longmont, Colorado resident and World Cup lover Joe Diefenbach said, "Mexico had a lot of control in the beginning of the game but not in the half, it kind of went downhill so they'll come back with more fire in their veins in the second half I'm sure," after watching how Mexico played during the first half.
One fan while wearing an afro wig said, "Mexico needs "El Chicharito" and more attacks from the players, I predict the score will be 2-1. I'm almost positive if not I'll chop off my hair."Denver resident, Victor Ibarra said, "I hope the coach puts in Javier "El Chicharito" Hernandez so the fans get excited as well as the players so it starts a new wave of enthusiasm and energy." Ibarra also mentions he comes to restaurants like Zocalo to watch the World Cup games, but also to support the small Latino businesses in Denver.
Another fan Edeberto Sosa chuckled, "We played like we never played before, but we lost like always." Sosa says both teams played great and Mexico just missed their goal.
Isaiah Jimenez, Zocalo regular and Mexico fan said, "I believe Mexico played really well, but the results say otherwise." He's just one of the fans that were disappointed by the outcome.
Mexico fan, Cosme Bravo said, "I think Mexico let themselves be beat because we wanted a match against Argentina, everything was planned out, but we will win that game."
Mexico had plenty of chances to score the tiebreaker but after many attempts they failed to do so.
With the loss, Mexico faces Argentina next. Many predict Argentina will win the World Cup because of their great defense and strikers. May the best team win.
